SATA Master/Slave

The Walmsley's

Hi

I'm about to get a new SATA H/D (Maxtor diamond plus 9 160GB) aswell as my
200GB version. I need to configure the previous 200GB drive to act as slave.
I have been advised to remove the jumper on it, so the 160GB acts as master,
but it appears the jumper is "permanent". I have checked the manual and it
says "Do Not Remove" the jumper.

How do I set it to slave then??

Any Ideas.

TIA

Nik.

Wrong. When using SATA drives there is NO Master or Slave. So you CANNOT
select as such with a jumper.

You don't. Master/slave only applies to drives on the same physical
cable. Since SATA only allows one drive per cable, the master/slave
concept doesn't exist and no jumpering is required.

Ok, thatks for clearing that up.

Am I right in assuming that I choose which drive to boot from in the BIOS
then?

Basically, I sent the PC for repair (Back to MESH) and retained the H/D to
continue to work from it. MESH tell me I need a new MoBo and Graphics card,
and have also offered me a great deal to fit a new H/D.

They are configuring the PC to Boot from the New H/D (Which suits me because
my existing version of XP has a few little niggly errors that I can't
resolve) and I would like to just plug the old one in and it recognise that
as my "secondary" drive, with all my old files etc on.

Is it as simple as just plugging in the old drive then?

Many thanks again.

Nik.

Please tell *us* what the BIOS defaults to. I would expect
that the default boot order is the same as the S-ATA channel
order, and that you can alter the boot order from that by
manual keyboard input to the BIOS.

I haven't got the PC back yet, but I'll be back asking questions when I do.
I'm pretty sure it's going to be set in the bios. It's an Asus P5GDC board,
whatever bios that comes with.
