SATA is also IDE?

Both my harddisk and dvd drive are SATA, but in disk management, it appear
as IDE.

Is SATA also another form of IDE?

ATA is IDE
Serial ATA is improved IDE
with some of the properties
of SCSI.

In the BIOS settings, you can put the chipset's southbridge SATA controller
into IDE Legacy/Compatibility (or similar name) Mode, as well as normal SATA
mode (which will give you extra performance/features, like AHCI and NCQ, and
also RAID modes on higher-end boards.

I have never used IDE Legacy Mode, but it looks like you two have it on your
computers. I think it allows you to install Windows when you do not have
the SATA drivers to hand, but once you have done that you should install the
drivers and use native SATA mode. You probably have a lot of things you can
do to make your computer faster if it was made as badly as that, IMO.

Many SATA controllers offer an IDE compatible operation mode to increase
compatibility.

The BIOS in my PC sets SATA drives to look like IDE drives to the OS, by
default. It makes installing pre-Vista versions of Windows much easier.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that there are currently two forms
of ATA - SATA (serial ATA) and PATA (parallel ATA). Both of these
controllers are on the IDE bus - so they are both "forms of IDE".

In IDE Legacy mode I don't think you get the benefits of NCQ and you do not
use AHCI on Intel chipset boards, so it is not something to prefer to use
after installation.

My BIOS only has RAID and IDE as choices.

In Disk Management there isn't even an indication of any drive (I have
two IDE and two SATA) being IDE. They all show BASIC.

What chipset do you have? Some nVidia or VIA one I would suspect. Maybe
the IDE mode works as full SATA.

Absolutely. In fact, I switched mine to AHCI after installation. I can't
remember exactly how, now, but you have to preinstall the drivers, restart
and switch over to AHCI in the BIOS. Vista then boots, going through
various "new hardware" loops, and finally settles down happily.

The one thing that is true is the fact you said your brain is limited. I
think it is very limited.
