Sata Hard Disk

Hi,

I've transferred the old Sata HD to my new system (the old system
died), I want to be able to access and transfer some of the data on
the old hard drive to the new hard drive on the system and then wipe
it clean to use as extra storage. Currently the old hard drive shows
up in the device manager but not in windows explorer.

I'm running XP Pro

both HDs are Maxtor

I'd be grateful for any advice

Thanks

So what does disk management have to say about the new drive? For
instance, what drive letter does it have? Does it say that it is healthy?

Hi John,

Thanks for replying. DIsk management doesn't ive it a drive letter,
it's just called disk 1, says it's healthy (active)

If you tell disk management to give it a drive letter I bet you'll have
a lot more luck accessing it via XP. Just a guess... ;-)

Got to give it a Drv letter.
XP is sometimes reluctant to show disc's after a change.
A tactic that helps is to right click the Drive in Explorer
then select 'Properties'...then Hardware Tab ..you will now need to select
the wanted drive again here...then on that page 'Properties' ...'Volumes'
Tab..
Then the 'Populate' to get the partitions on that disc displayed ...
It should show up after that in explorer.
But it does need to have a Drv. Letter assigned.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Pretty sure I tried something similar already
but will check when I get home.

Thanks

Another thing to try Jez,

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk
Management

Identify the drive. Right Click on the left hand side. Does the
dialog box have an option called "Initialise Disk"?? If it does click
on this, it should solve your problem.

Hope tis helps.

Thanks for the info - this won't affect the data already on the disk?
I.e. I won't lose any of it?

This is completely meaningless. See below.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem, but my old drive is showing up as
"f". The problem I have is (I have xp home on both drives)
how do I get the stuff from one drive to another? Here is what I have
done so far
1. went to F drive
2. went to docs & settings
3. went to my folder (user folder, my log on)
4. right click and go to properties
5. went to sharing tab
6. went to network sharing and security
7. check box share this on the network, click apply, then OK
this let me see all my folders under my name
8. click on my docs and got this message

F:\Documents and Settings\harry\My Documents is not accessible.

Access is denied.

Ok so how do I get my data off this other drive is I keep getting this
error?

Hi, right clicking on the relevant drive in Computer Management only
gives the option to convert to dynamic disk

If you get down to the Documents and Settings\[username]folder and
right-click on it what are the sharing settings showing? I'm not
familiar with XP Home but in regular XP it is a bit paranoid about
sharing this particular directory and it must be explicitly shared IIRC.
