SATA and IDE HDD

I have an MSI 848P NEO mobo and have recently purchased a 160GB Sata HDD as a
master and pushed my IDE to slave. However in the BIOS it shows the IDE
drive as a peripheral and not a boot device.

Are these two types of drives compatible in this way? Can you use Sata's
with IDE drives?

You should be able to. But they will be on different channels: the IDE
one should be the master on its channel, and the Sata master on its one.
Whether the BIOS will then accept booting the IDE device is a matter for
the BIOS, but I would have expected it
