sasser or not?

I am using xp home and have been for some time. My HP Pavilion laptop has
always been a little flaky and I have had to reinstall the OS (OEM) five
times in two and a half years. I have always managed to recover my data by
one process or another.

At the time of this problem I had all the updates installed, including SP2
and was running Norton AV and it was up to date and had scanned the system a
couple of days earlier.

Current problem looks a lot like Sasser. Before I get a desktop screen I
get "lsass.exe system error. Object name not found." The screen system
freezes there and clicking "ok" on the dialogue box reboots the computer to
the same spot.

Using an upgrade disc from my desktop computer I tried the Repair a previous
installation process and get the same dead-end result. Also, I cannot get
into safe mode and prior working startup produced the same result. I can get
into the repair console. I did rename lsass.exe in \system32 and replaced
it with lsass.exe copied from my desktop. same problem.

So, I am stuck. Since I had so many problems with my laptop I tried not to
store any important material on it, but had recently dumped 3 gigabytes of
sound files from a project onto it in order to clear up some space on the
desktop for some new software installations. I can get them all back from
other sources but at a significant time loss.

If this is indeed Sasser I have not been able to find a fix that does not
require getting at least to the desktop environment.

Any suggestions would be more than welcome and appreciated.

Hi Michael,

Doesn't sound like Sasser to me. Did you run a System restore on this system
shortly before this happened? There is a known issue with certain HP
machines and the first Service Pack that will cause the system to be
unbootable. It is discussed here:

Problem is, you needed to install the fix before you did the system restore.

Thanks Rick. I hadn't run a System restore. Sounds like I am out of luck.

Incidentally, when I try to use the link you provided to the HP document it
tries to force me to use a dial up account. Even when I cut and paste into
an active IE window. Least of my problems, but it is strange.
