Sandisk USB 256MB Flash Stick.

Well, I attach the Flash Stick to my PC's USB port. The green light
comes on. But MY COMPUTER does not show a new drive/drive letter, as do
other USB attachments such as Flash Card reader, Camera, etc.

So I check DEVICE MANGER. Yellow Exclamation mark.

I start the NEW HARDWARE INSTALLATION WIZARD and it tells me that using
the software that WIN XP HOME EDITION (FULL ) has, will make my system
unstable because the hardware is not compatible with WIN XP, and
neither is the software. Sandisk Help Files are written in something
other than simple English! Whatever can I do?

BUT..and here's the biggie....When I plug that flash stick in my home
built PC with WIN XP HOME OEM, it works like a charm, sets up the disk
drive letter and a small app on the desktop.

Moral to the story...why can't MS send out an error emssage that makes
sense? Why does this work without software right off the bat on my OEM
WIN XP, but impossible to use on my Dell w/WIN XP HOME,complete.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Help someone, Please?

Well you supplied no information whatsoever about what is different between
"your" PC and "in your home in your home built PC."

At first one would think you were talking about it as my PC, then you switch
to your home PC...

A little more information is required about your first one to tell what the
difference is.

I have two PC's:
One is Home-Built wih WIN XP OEM. The other a Dell with the original
WIN XP Home, (not OEM)

The USB flash stick works right off the bat on the Home-Built with WIN
XP OEM.

It does NOT work with the DELL that has WIN XP HOME,

I tried the New Hardware Wizard, but it warns that it is not compatible
with the Flash Stick. and will cause my system to become unstable. So
I do NOT use the N H W.

I just pull the stick, pop it into my WIN XP HOME , OEM...and there it
is..beautiful.!!!!

Help?

Two questions come to mind:

Is SP2 installed on one machine and not on the other?

Does the Dell require drivers that the home-built machine
doesn't?

What is the exact message from the new hardware wizard when you attempt to
install the memory stick? Are you sure it isn't just a warning? Do you get
the option to continue the installation?

Great point! The WIN XP OEM on theHome Built PC does NOT have SP2!!

The DELL has SP2 installed....maybe that's why?

Also, error messages are so illusive. I'm quite sure that it reads,
paraphrasing, that running the Add New Hardware Wizard is not
compatible with WIN XP, and continuing could make your system unstable.
Somebody's kiddin' me?

I said full speed ahead! Oooops...everything got screwed up so I had
to use GOBACK to revert to my first boot of the day!

I give up!

Do you mean elusive? Paraphrasing the message is the problem - I doubt that
it would say that running the wizard is not compatible, but it could say
that the driver appears to be unsigned and that therefore installing the
driver may make you system unstable. In that case, I would ignore the
message and continue.

If you are saying this is what you did and your system got screwed then you
should describe exactly what the effect was, and contact the manufacturer to
advise them that their drivers have a fault.
