Been having trouble with my CD-R/RW drive not recognising if there's
a disc in the drive. It happened when I tried to install drivers for my new
printer a few weeks back (had to d/load from manufacturer). Now I'm trying
to burn some CD-RW's but the CD writing wizard says there is "no disc in the
drive, please insert one". Not true. The disc is there but it just doesn't
see it.
Poking around trying to find any answers I've come across device
manager which lists my CD drive as a "Saosung" as opposed to a Samsung.
Can't find any info on Saosung so I suspect something has somehow gotten
changed.
Even using Regedt32, I've navigated to HKey, Local
Machine/system/current control set/enum/IDE
which shows 11 entries for CD-RW's under IDE. 3 refer to a Samsung
CD-RW240B, 3 to a "Saosung CD-RW240B and 1 for a "Saosune CD_RW240@.
How can I get my CD-RW working again? I have no idea how these other
entries got into the reg.
Google returns a giggle when I type in Saosung. No matches. Likewise
with Saosune.

Sounds like something got corrupted. Go to Device Manager and delete it. Shut
down your computer, open the case and disconnect the data cable to it.
Restart your computer. Go to Http://www.macecraft.com and download and
install RegSupreme Pro. After install, start it and click on the Registry
Cleaner tab at the top. Choose Deep and Start. After it's finished, Click
Select, then All. Click Fix at the bottom. After it's finished, close it and
shut down your computer. Reconnect the data cable and restart your computer.
Reinstall the drivers. Hopefully this should correct the problem. The key is
to get all of that junk out of the registry. RegSupreme Pro is a fully
functional trial version, but it will do what you need it to do. I've been
using it for years and it works great. Hope this helps you.

I assume the junk you're refering to is the reg entries about Saosung and
Saosune. No such animals, are there?
The windows troubleshooter doesn't help at all. If I were to delete
the Saosung listing in Device Manager would the drivers get reinstalled when
XP found new hardware after reboot?
Just a little leery about cleaning a lot of crap out of the registry.
Been told here before that most Regcleaners do more harm than good. Hate to
have that happen.

You could of course delete delete all references to Saosung and Saosune manually
from the registry and not depend upon a regcleaner.
The "search" function will help you find all references to those entries.
Then delete from Device Manager and reboot letting XP redetect the drive and
load the right drivers from its database.

Thanks for the advice. Will try in the morning when my eyes aren't so blurry
from searching 1000's of pages.
