Samsung CLP-510 colour laser

Hi

I'm considering one of these Samsung CLP-510 colour laser printers,
but I'm a bit put off by mixed reviews; mostly saying that the text
quality is a bit fuzzy.

Is there anyone who owns one of these? What do you think?

Even better, if someone in the UK would try printing one of my files
for me so I can see how it looks with the things I print (a couple of
pages, obviously I'd happily pay costs/postage etc)

Thanks
Steve

Hi!

I was nearly put off as well...all of the reviews from "big names" that I
read said the printer output fuzzy text and wasn't great for photos.

I was going to buy a CLP-510N. However, I ended up with a CLP-550N because
the company I chose to buy it from had run out of the CLP-510. Apart from
more RAM and a Postscript interpreter, the two printers are almost
completely identical. Reviews said the same thing about the 550 as the
510...fuzzy text, doesn't do a great job on photos, etc.
Is there anyone who owns one of these? What do you think?

After having owned one for a while, I'd have to say that I am completely
satisfied. The PostScript interpreter is slow, but that's not a big deal. As
far as text quality, mine prints very sharp text. High resolution
photographs are stunning...I don't think even the best inkjet printer could
compare to what the Samsung can put out.

While there's no running toner meter available, the toner cartridges appear
to have a much longer lifetime than those from HP. Samsung says all the
colors are good for 5,000 pages (IIRC) and the black for 7,000 pages. The
printing is not waxy either. I have an HP Color LaserJet 2500n and while it
is a nice printer, the short lifetime of the supplies, high cost and waxy
"feel" to the printouts puts me off a little bit.

I have a review of the CLP-550N available here:

Thanks William, that's really useful. I wonder if any of the people
who complain of fuzzy text have got something like the 'paper
thickness' setting wrong (for example, no idea if there is such a
thing on the Samsung).

I notice that PC World have a special offer of £150 on the 510 at the
moment, unfortunately no-one has them in stock.

If I can find one at that price, I think I'll go out and get one.

Regards

Steve

I've been quite happy with my 510 as well. I have printed many
presentations (consulting), and my wife uses it extensively (graduate
student). Very pleased with the crispness, the colour, and consumable cost.
I am on my third set of toners.
