Show me the "event error log" and you should see what is causing the error.

Usually drivers or updates are missing.

You ain't using McCrapy AV are you?

Error Log

This may not be the same event as I have had the BSOD loads of times and this is the only error logged since first switch on yesterday
Faulting application msimn.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00018fea.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

However it did ship with Mcafee 90 day trial which is still on.

What do reckon ? Take that Off ?

Surely it cant be that ( Ha Ha Ha ) because it says

I should also have said. No drivers are supplied by NEC for the Sony NEC Optiarc ND-3570A DVD/CD +-RW as Windows XP supplies the driver. No hardware update in Microsoft Hardware listings.
I have found a firmware update but that will run. Also lots of dire warnings that after application your DVVD Device may not function (Good innit ? )

I was not implying there was anything wrong with the CDRom drive.

Thanks.

I know nothing about McAfee. First time I have seen it. If you reckon it causes problems I will stick AVG on. Never had problems any with that

I removed McAfee . No change same problem.
No reply from Dell support but someone on the forum had same problem suggests
1 Reseating memory modules
2 Reseat the IDE connector on DVD
3 Search registry for LowerFilters UpperFilters (Roxio Burn Application) and delete.

Yes. All the XP updates are now on. msimn.exe thats outlook express isnt it ? probably not related to the DVD crashing ?

Another BSOD was driver_irql_not_less_or_equal STOP 0x000000D1 (0x020AA005 0x0000002 0x00000001 0 x 7C918154

Nothing seems to log to the event viewer after BSOD.

Out of my depth now.

I think you are out of your depth to start with ...

I don't think your listening ... You HAVE bad drivers.

Stop Errors are notorious to isolate ... however, as with the other error, the "clues" are all there. I suggest if you do not know how to read those clues, you give the PC so someone who can.

I'll give you a hint ... driver and D1

Big hint ...

I am trying my very best ! I am sorry if it is not good enough for you. It is fairly obvious I am not as clued up as you lot. That is why I joined this forum. I did not realise it was only for experts to take the pi**.
I thought I said very early on that the Sony NEC Optiarc ND-3570A DVD/CD +-RW had no driver supplied by NEC and their site says the XP to SP2 built in driver controls it (whatever that is ). c:\windows/system 32\drivers\cdrom.sys, imapi.sys redbook.sys, starprop.dll are listed in device manager.
PC is Dell Dimension 9150.

Sorry, but I am me, I won't change ...

I may have not have put my point accross very well ... the 'drivers' I am going on about have nothing to do with the CDRom drive.

I do not think there is anything wrong with the CD drive ... though I could be wrong.

The 'drivers' I am on about are system drivers, software drivers and software in general.

Lets start again ... ;)

You say you formatted the HD ... can I ask why? Did you back up the Dell partition with all the drivers on it?

If there is nothing to loose, start again from scratch ... but do not install McCrapie until you have at least established it ain't the cause of some errors ... better still scrap it and use another AV.

Got to Dell's website for the 9150 and insure you have the relivent drivers. :thumb:
