Safely Remove Icon has disappeared

I just installed Nero 8 and this icon has disappeared. I have talked to
Nero and they have sent me a registry checker file and Driver-Clean Tool.
The Clean Tool found no drivers to clean and the registry checker did find
errors which supposedly were fixed, but the problem was not resolved. I
have gotten back to Nero and they will escalate the problem, even though
they have not heard of this before. I have decided to come here because I
there must be a simple configuration fix of some kind to get this icon
working again so I can use my memory stick. Right now when I plug in my
memory stick, the usual windows box comes up with a list of menu items to
check and the light on my memory stick flashes, but after about 4 seconds,
the windows box disappears and the light stops flashing. I have another
computer here and it does see the memory stick. I am sure it is a Windows
problem probably created by the Nero 8 install.

In my own search of the net for a solution, I stumbled upon this URL:
http://ask-leo.com/safely_remove_ha...w_do_i_safely_remove_hardware_without_it.html
It talks about a similar problem where one has already plugged in a memory
stick and wants to eject it safely. What I did was from Admin mode run the
following:
RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
The Safely Remove Hardware box does come up with nothing in it. I then
plugged in my memory stick and was able to use it. I then safely removed my
memory stick, rebooted my PC, then went back to Admin mode. When I plug in
my memory stick, all functions do work now in Admin mode.
However when I go back to a non-Admin account, I still have the same
problem. So I am partially down the solution path here I think. But I need
a total solution.
I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 with all updates installed. Does anybody
have any ideas?

go to the admin account open up my computer and then the c drive.
right click in a blank area of the c drive and create--new--text file.
hit enter to use the default name.
double click the new text file.
type in or copy paste in

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

then go to file then save as (make sure to save it in the root of the c:
drive to find easier later)
then name it runme.bat
then log out of the admin account.
log into the first account you want to restore hotplug in
go to my computer then the c drive.
now right click the file and go to the option "run as" it should be just
below "open"
in the dialog window click the radio button for "the following user"
select the Administrator user name and supply the password if needed then
click the ok button
plug in your memory stick, wait for the hotplug safely remove hardware box
and then remove.
do the same on all the accounts you want to restore hotplug fuctionality to.

best of luck

OK, I got as far as "now right click the file and go to the option "run as"
it should be just below "open""
My selection for the file is:

open
edit
print
scan runme.bat
e-mail with Yahoo!
-------------------
send to
-------------------
cut
copy
-------------------
create shortcut
delete
rename
-------------------
properties

So your menu must be different than mine.
By the way I have already tried changing the non-admin account to admin
status, then getting safely remove hardware program working, then changing
the account back to non-admin status. The problem then comes back. For
some reason I think the problem is than the safely remove hardware program
now runs in admin mode. It used to run in both modes before my Nero8
install.

OK, I have tried something else from a cmd box. USER-P6TUNUJJ60 is my
computer name and below that is WORKGROUP. In non admin mode using account
Dad (admin user is Dad-Admin), I type from the root directory which is e: :
e:\>runas /user:Dad-Admin runme
and I get:
Enter the password for Dad-Admin:
I then enter it (the password is not shown) and press enter.
It then says: Attempting to start runme as user "USER-P6TUNUJJ60\Dad-Admin"
....
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - runme
87: The parameter is incorrect.

Any ideas?

OK, I finally uninstalled Nero8 and this function is working again in non
admin mode. Nero8 has done something to my system (perhaps more than one
change!!!). Can I fix these things myself or go back to Nero?
For example I just noticed today that when I shutdown Windows the electrical
power now is not automatically turned off. I now get a message saying it is
safe to turn off the power (from the switch). This never happened before.
Is there a Windows configuration that I can change to get it back? I cannot
find it under control panel, power options and I do not want to have to go
to Nero every time I find something now!!!

I also lost the icon in the tray. I wrote and ran the suggested "runme" and
the icon only appears after plugging in the USB device. Any way to have the
icon show before pluggin in device?
