Safely remove hardware

I am not very good with computers so I'll describe this as best as I can.
When I look at my desktop, there is a bar along the bottom. To the far left
it says START. To the far right, there are little pictures that I know are
for things like volume, norton, etc. Today I noticed one new little picture
there and when I hover over it, a message comes up that says: Safely Remove
Hardware. Then if I click on it once it says safely remove...and there's a
bunch of letters and numbers...then there's a dash and then Drive(C). Can you
tell me why this is there? I never noticed it before, but maybe I just never
looked? Can you help me understand what that is for? Thank you for your help.

It normally appears when you plug in a Memory Stick, Camerea, etc.
You use the "Safely remove" to stop the process, so that you can remove
without corrupting the files on it.

HI
Thank you for the explanation. Does it sound to you like it is asking if I
want to safely remove the whole C drive? Because if so, even I know that's
not okay!! or does the letters and numbers represent the equipment or
whatever it is, and the part after the letters and numbers where it says C
drive just shows you WHERE the item is or something like that. Do you know
what I mean? Sorry about my bad explanations! I'm just wondering if I should
click on it, or will that remove my whole C drive since it says something
about C drive on it.

You can click on it with no problem. If C is your system drive, even if you
select to remove it, it will not allow you to.

Not speaking to this specific problem... I see others have...

I highly recommend that you look at the Help and Support tool and peruse the
"Windows Basics" link. Lots of good stuff in there, including the name of
the "...far right, there are little pictures..." little pictures. (Click on
the "Start" "Orb", as it's called, then click on the "Help and Support"
button, which should be near the bottom of the right hand column of the
Start menu.)

Good luck!

You must have connected a peripheral device to your computer and
disconnected it without using the "safely remove hardware" option.

I apologize for this answer as I am not a Microsoft MVP, the only people who
are qualified to answer your questions.

Have a nice day.

Come on C.B. There are many that post to these newsgroups and provide needed
assistance. Just because you aren't qualified doesn't mean that there aren't
hundreds of folks that undertand the questions and can provide answers for
those that post.
