Safely Remove Hardware

I take it these USB components are not built into your computer, so you
don't want the add/remove hardware wizard from contro panel.

It sounds to me as though you are the victim of the disappearing icons
problem. Try going to the start menu and choose log off. This should
bring your tray icon back when windows reappears.
