Is there a way to get the "safely remove hardware" icon
from the taskbar other than hiding it?

I can't think why you would want to do that, Hank. It should only be there
when you're using removeable hardware and simply unplugging the item without
right clicking this little chap, is not recommended.

Good luck,

Ed

Hi!Hank!
No apart from "Always Hide" option there is no other way to hide it.
Right -click the notification area, and select Properties. Under the
Notification area heading, click Customize. Find the Safely Remove
Hardware icon> choose Always hide in the Behavior column next to it >
OK and Apply .

From a past post from MVP RonnieVernon:

"How to Clear Past Items from the Notification Area:

If you are not comfortable with editing the registry, MVP Kelly has an
automated reg file to make the changes described in this article. Go to the
following website:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Scroll down to line 53, left side, and click that link to download the
"pastitems.reg file. Go to this file and double click the file to merge it
into the registry."
