Safely Remove Hardware icon

I've got a Safely Remove Hardware Icon on the task bar.
The devices to be removed are the USB mass storage devices: (I think the
camera card reader selection).
I get a choice of properties,stop, but no (stop the process)
What's going on here?

That's the way you safely remove a USB (or firewire) device, rather than
just yanking it out. It lets Windows close the connection properly.
