The safely remove hardware icon is missing from my system tray -I have
cutomized notifications and selected 'always show' but it still does not
appear. Any suggestions?

Unless a removable hardware i.e. a USB device is attached to the system
it won't show.So check that first.

Something needs to be plugged into a USB port.

If you do not see the Safe Removal icon, your device does not support safe
removal, and you cannot unplug or eject your device using Safe Removal.

Which makes the question moot, right?

USB devices are SUPPOSED to be easily connected/disconnected.

Yes I did have a USB storage device plug in, however the problem seems to
have now cured itself. Thanks anyway for your help
