safely remove hardware afte log off

If I first log-off from Windows and then simply unplug the external device
(USB key or external hard drive), does that causes any damage short term or
long term to the device. Or it is as good as first stopping the device by
using the "Safely remove hardware" icon.

Thanks

If you mean shut-down Windows and turn off your computer, then no damage
should be done.

Well, you got me there. Being that the device is still powered, I would
definitely opt for the "safely remove hardware" icon. Better be safe than
sorry.
