Safe to Run Without SP2?

Thanks, Robert. It may be something as simple as a driver for a sound card
or video card that needs to be updated, so I'll give that a shot.

Thanks, Rock. That would be a lot easier than reinstalling XP Home, all of
my drivers, all of my software, and all of their related updates. That
process takes about 3-4 hours! I appreciate your suggestion!

You're welcome Steve.

If you run with an athlon64 or one of the really new intel pentiums that
support hardware DEP, this can actually be a very big issue with driver
support and SP2.

Thanks...that's something I hadn't thought of. I might give that a try, but
the last (and 5th) time SP2 didn't install properly I had to rebuild my
entire system, so I'm trying to avoid a repeat of that if at all possible.
Thanks again for the advice.

It is really a good idea for anyone upgrading to SP2 to make a
mirror backup of their C drive just before trying the install.
That way, if it fails, no problem -- in half an hour you are back
where you started. Drive Image or Ghost is the way to go. It took
me two tries to install SP2 (which I installed mainly with an eye
to IE 7, which will only run on SP2). The first time I got a
memory error every time I booted, and had to revert to my mirror
image backup. Problem turned out to be minor -- only an out-dated
version of ZoneAlarm that was screwing up the boot. But I saved
myself a lot of grief by having a mirror of the C drive.
