Safe to Delete or Not? And What are they for?

I had installed a program called Registry Mechanic 6.0, but now I have
uninstalled it. I've noticed some files which seemed to have appeared with
the installation of Registry Mechanic. I want to delete them no matter how
unimportant it may be since it takes up space and I don't like keeping junk
left overs by removed programs.

These are:

in folder system32/config:
default.rrr
sam.rrr
software.rrr

in folder Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows
s-1-5-21-1482476501-2025429265-682003330-1003_classes.rrr

in folder C:\
s-1-5-21-1482476501-2025429265-682003330-1003.rrr
ntuser.dat

I have searched the web, but have not been able to find much about what
these files are for and whether or not it is safe for deletion. What that the
file extension 'rrr' mean?

I would like to delete them. Is it safe to delete all these files? If not
all of them, which ones can and which ones can not be deleted? Also would it
effect the OS? I'm using windows xp pro.

Sorry for wasting your time but if you don't know just say so.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike,

The files in system32/config are backups of parts of the registry (the
originals being SYSTEM SAM SOFTWARE DEFAULT SECURITY, no extension).
The other .rrr file in c:\ is also a backup. Those should all be safe
to remove.

c:\ntuser.dat shouldn't be located there (should be in %userprofile%).
If it is there, and is more current, the c:\ntuser.dat should be safe to
delete.

Those appear to be backups of the the windows registry hives. I would think
they are fine to delete, but I've not used that program. You really should
contact tech support for Registry Mechanic.

Unfortunately it may take months or more to discover that an important
key was removed by the software, and was not needed until now!

Download "Your uninstaller pro" from USeNext,
it removes all traces from the system.
