Safe Networking

I have two computers both with XP SP2 networked together
through a router working fine. When I set up the network
through network connection wizard I allowed the computers
to share files and printers as an exception. My question
is how secure will the computers be to the rest of the
internet? Will the firewall still block any traffic
outside of the two computers connected together?

Thanks.

You will be fine as long as you run good virus protection.
You are hidden from the outside by the router which has a built-in NAT.

If your computers are plugged into the router ports and share a common
private IP subnet (eg, 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.5) they are protected
by the NAT in the router.

If they are sharing files across the router (across the Internet) they
are likely vulnerable unless you use a custom setting in the SP2 Windows
Firewall or a third-party firewall with a custom Trusted network
configuration.
