Had a few probs spyware and trogens which I think are ok now.
I had been able to get into safe mode (f8) but now can't boot into this
mode. What happens is when I press F* and take option safe mode and log in
either as owener or administrator and it askes me to confirm safe mose it
then just hangs!!!!

Can you get into Regular Mode? Perhaps the malware damaged the
userinit.exe. See:

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892893

Restore Winlogon\Userinit -
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_wel_screen.htm

The wsaupdater malware is really old now, but other malware can do the
same thing.

You are not providing enough information to get focused help. Perhaps
you aren't getting into Safe Mode because 1) you aren't doing it
correctly; 2) you have an older version of Nero's InCD installed with
XPSP2; 3) the malware is still active on your computer and/or damaged
system files.

I'm sorry, but there is no way to tell from your post. You've also made
various posts all over (I'm assuming you are the same "Sal" from the
other threads) so I don't know 1) details about your computer; 2)
details about the malware you had; 3) what you've done.

Hi
Sorry I will provide as much information as I can.
I am trying to sort out a Windows XP SP2 HP Pc. This had mega problems with
trogens and spyware. I installed SpybotSD, Adaware and AVG. I updated all
these prior to taking it into my house where I am not able to connect to the
internet as I am on broadband. I ran all the checks in safe mode. The
computer's state at the moment is that I am no longer able to get into dafe
mode as it freezes after the prompt to confirm safe mode. I am able to log
into normal windows mode. The last scan I ran identified
backddor:win32/rbot.gen in C:windows\winlogin.exe. It said it was not able
to deal with the problem and to scan with anti-virus software. Tis is did
with AVG and it identified nothing. I don't want to take the computer back
and connect tothe internet and have trogens identified, healed and repeated.
If you need any other information, please let me know. S

You posted in yet another place and I told you to make one thread and
provide all information. Never mind about making a new thread now;
let's work with *this* one. I will not be monitoring any other threads
by you on this subject except this one.

You are not getting the machine clean. Do as David Lipman and I
suggested in various threads:

1) Go through *all* the steps listed at the link below, following *all*
instructions and perhaps even running HijackThis and posting on one of
the specialty forums (not here!);

2) Or take the computer to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local version of BigStoreUSA);

3) Or do a clean install of windows;

4) If you are doing computer tech support yourself and this is a
customer's computer, then admit to your customer that this isn't your
area of expertise and give him/her the choice of having someone else
work on it or doing a clean install.

Here are all the instructions for malware removal, including links to
David's Multi_AV and HijackThis forums:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

There is no shame in admitting that removing malware isn't your area of
expertise; it can be extremely complex.

You're welcome. Don't connect to the Internet without being protected by
the XP SP2 firewall.
