Chris

I need to restart the computer in safe mode and I have no
clue how to do it. I'm running Windows XP, not the pro or
office version.

Restart your computer and as the first screens appear (showing black and
white system info) start pressing F8 key several times rapidly in succession
until you see a black and white screen that will say something like Which
version of XP do you want to start.. It will only list whatever system you
have such as WIndows XP Home Edition or whatever you have.. Take the time to
read the screen , then use your Up and Down arrows on your keyboard to move
up to the Choice you wish to make, it will then be highlighted (SAFE MODE is
what you want to highlight and then Select. When it is highlihgted push the
'select' key on your keyboard.
The machine will go thru some craziness and then you will find your Desktop
doesn't look like it usually does (that is o.k.) and it will say running in
safe mode at the top, sides and bottom of the screen.. At that point, only
basic drivers and application access will be possible which is what you want
anyway, so you can do whatever it is you have to do in Safe Mode..

When you finish with Safe Mode and reboot, your machine will
automatically boot back into normal mode and everything will appear as
usual..

Hi,

If you are currently running in normal more, click start/run, enter msconfig
and click ok. Go to the boot.ini tab and enable the line to load safeboot.

Otherwise, from a cold start or restart, depress and hold the <ctrl> key
imediately after the initial POST and before WinXP begins to load. Another
option is to repeatedly tap the F8 key at this point.

leave it to an msmvp to complicate an ordinary solution already provided.

A) your post did not show when I created mine

B) The OP wanted options, I gave them. Different things work best for
different people. Many, many people report difficulty in accessing the boot
options using the F8 key.
