Lately my XP ME PC refuses to boot completely. It just stays on the black
screen with the XP logo. When I reboot into Safe Mode, one of the options
is.. "Use the last known good configuration". After I select this, the boot
completes. The next day, same problem-same solution. How do I find out what
this last known good configuration is and make XP remember to use it?
Windows System Restore has not helped nor has running restore from ERUNT. If
I have to use my PC's Recovery option I will, but I'm hoping their is
something less invasive and time consuming. Thank you, Steve T.

Hello Steve,
Open Regedit
Go to HKLM\System\Select
Look for the current and failed values.
These refer to controlsets
Current for me equals 0x00000001(1) which means HKLM\system\controlset1
Failed is equal to 0x00000000(0) which means I haven't had a failure.
You will have to compare failed controlset with the one numbered under
listed. ( probably shouldn't use HKLM\System\currentcontrolset since that
is what is loaded at the currenttime and will be saved to whatever is
listed as current at shutdown.)
You should able to export for control sets as text files then run something
like windiff against them. (support.cab under support tools folder on the
cd contains windiff)
Thanks,
