Safe Mode Only!

Please help!

I can only boot XP Pro into safe mode. If I try to boot into Safe Mode
w/ntwrkg, I get an error message that says I must register XP! It IS legally
registered. DOS Prompt boot is also OK.
I have the BIOS set to minimal default config, I set MSConfig to min.
config. Still N.G.
Svc Pack 2 is installed. AMD 64 bit, 2GB RAM. This drive was transferred
form an older system with much diff. hardware. System runs fine when I
installed XP Pro 64 bit on a spare HD!
I tried creating a bootlog.txt file, but couldn't find it (using DOS
prompt.) Any clues appreciated!

Many thanks,

Dave

You gave a lot of information, but said nothing about the cause until 3/4 of
the way through...

"This drive was transferred form an older system with much diff. hardware."

Windows XP is not easily transferrable to different hardware like that. A
simple search before you got started would have pointed you to this..

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

Thanks for your answer, which was completely at the end of
your message.
Not easily transferable doesn't help me much.
Possibly someone else could give me a few words of help.
P.S. I've been through the KB and Web search routes...

Perform the repair install. That is what you need to do. You shouldn't
lose anything - only get your installation to work with the new hardware.

Shenan,

I tried that several weeks ago, with no luck. I was on the phone with MSFT
Tech Support (in India),
back then, and they had me uninstall SP2, re-install it, and many other
devious and wonderful
incantations. Once they got me to be able to boot in Safe Mode, they assumed
all was well,
and terminated the service calls (there were three of them on three
different days!)
I will try it once more. This is disheartening, as I have NEVER had to
reformat and reinstall an MSFT O.S!
I'm talking about starting with Win 3.0!!
Since I do have a backup system, I don't plan on giving up!
Thanks,
Dave
