s-video connection

I dont know if somebody is able to help me but here goes my problem...
Today I bought a complete kit cable connection lead for my laptop to the tv
so that it will enable me to watch my dvds on my laptop on the tv screen. I
have the yellow s-video connection point at the back of my laptop connected
up to the scart lead which is then connected to the scart connection on my
tv. I am sure that I have placed all the cables in the correct places. I
thought that I would have to tune my tv into the laptop, so I did a tv
tuning search to find the laptop screen, but I couldnt find it. The man in
the shop said I might need to change my display settings. So I went into
dispay properties/ settings/ advanced/ but i couldnt see what to change
there, although I did find a little TV screen and clicked that box to change
to the new view. It said it would give me 15 seconds then it would revert
back to my old settings, but the problem was that my screen went entirely
black on my laptop so i could see how to make it stay like that if it was
the correct settings. While it was in this black screen mode I searched the
tv tuning set up, but still i found no hint of a laptop on my tv. Not even a
sound through the tv (as I had the sound connection set up too to play
through my tv)
I tried using the trouble shooting, but what they say do doesnt seem to
apply to what I can see on my screen.
I have....
All the MS updates and am using mcafee AV. with the XP built in firewall on.
xp home
S3 graphics prosavage DDR
512 ram
pentium4
1.60GHs
Thanks for any help.

Do you need to switch the TV for the alternate input?
