i have read an excellent article on this subject at :

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

as a result of this i copied my i386 folder to the root of drive c:\ so that
i can run sfc from the hdd instead of being prompted for the windows cd rom.

i have made all of the necessary registry changes and i have checked and
triple checked them. when i first ran sfc it worked fine, i.e no cd needed,
now i try to run it and it says "please insert the windows xp professional
cd". well for a start, i have xp home edition, and why does it now want the
cd when all the regisrty paths point to c:\???

is there another registry entry that is not mentioned in the article?

thanks.

I can't actually help you with your problem; but I figured I'd let you know
that as a bench tech, I've never noticed SFC actually ask for the Home CD,
it always asks for Pro no matter what version it is (that I've noticed,
anyway.) Just a bug I guess and nothing to worry about. As for the other
thing.... *shrug*

i have found that changing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
\ServicePackSourcePath

to: C:\ ,

makes the problem go away and sfc completes without asking for the cd. i'm
not sure however if this is solving the problem or just covering it up.
