when i try to run set up from the hard drive (winnt32.exe) it tells me that
this program cannot be run in dos mode.

how do i run set up from the hard drive if this is the case? i have the i386
folder already on my hdd and am having problems using cd rom to install xp
so this is the option i would like.

Steve, you need to boot with the XP CD.
Every tool needed, is on it.
You may need to boot into the Bios and set the CD to boot before the hard
drive does.
Then install the CD and reboot.
Watch for the - Press any key to boot from the CD when prompted.
You can re-partition, format and install Windows XP all from the CD.

Good luck,
Jerry

i cannot boot from cd that's why i need to know how to install from hard
drive. the cd is too scratched for the cd rom to read it.

Be sure to run 'smartdrv.exe' first or the process will take forever and a
day.

winnt is the dos one.
