Sfc chks & replaces windows files if corrupted, the i386 folder might not have
them either, why not let it scan the xp cd...Either way,to set regedit to
set sfc
to also include i386,youd expand:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/
windows/set-up/open sourcepath.L.click on the cdrom,go to edit,modify,include
i386 along with its default setting D: cdrom with xp cd supposivly in
it,exit,L.click

Interesting. I had the same problem with sfc /scannow. I have a DELL
C521 with XP MCE, so I don't have MS CD's - just one CD from Dell.
When asked to insert the XP CD I put in the one from Dell and sfc
continued to run. After some minutes the program asked for XP CD #2 -
a thing I don't have.

Since my machine is under warranty, I called Dell. The techobabe that
took my call started guiding me thru various steps that I recognized
was going to reinstall all the software and reset my machine to the
condition it was in when delivered. I told her I did not want to do
that, I just wanted to run sfc. She told me that a complete
reinstallation was my only option.

There is no problem with my PC that I am aware of. Everything seems
to work okay except that I can not check my files with sfc.

I might try the registry change and set that pointer to c:\ instead of
the CD reader as described in the referenced article.

Anybody have thoughts on whether this is a good idea or not. I would
set a restore point first of course.

Jack, don't forget to copy the folder (i386) from your Dell CD to your root
directory of your HDD and then set the registry to seek from your HDD,____If
you have more than one HDD, I find it better to use a HDD that I use for all
backup's______Bill in OZ

Thanks for the tip but my machine came with i386 already in the root.
C:\i396 contains 7315 objects, most of which seem to have
indecipherable names.

Hello

In this case there can be the issue with service pack 2. Suppose when you
bought your computer, may be its possible it came preinstalled with windows
XP home/professional without service pack or with service pack 1.

The Dell reinstallation disk that you get with such computers also has same
status. SO when the computer is asking for the cd at that time its possible
you are entering the same cd and again it ask for the windows XP cd the
reason is now your computer is upgraded to Service pack 2. For running the
sfc /scannow you need to first remove the Service pack 2 from the Add/remove
programs. If you are planning to use your friend's windows XP cd with SP2
then also it will tell you that this is not the cd with which you have
installed the Operating system.
