I am a relative novice at networking and need some help. I have no problem
configuring my two computers into a network and using either one to access
the internet. I have enabled file sharing and can transfer data between the
two with no problems.

My problem is with the installation of a software package that I want to be
able to run from either computer. I can do it after a fashion if the
database is not in the Windows or Program Files directory. What I have done
is install the software on both computers but have the database only on
computer 2. It seems to work ok this way, but I am not sure of any problems
that may crop up. I will not be running the software on both computers at
the same time.

In order for it to work, the database cannot be in the Windows or Program
Files directory at present. I can't seem to configure file sharing to
enable access to these directories. Is it possible to configure Windows to
allow unrestricted access to these directories?

You must have XP Home which doesn't allow sharing to the Windows and
Program Files directories. You would need to upgrade to XP Pro on both
machines and disable Simple Sharing.

OK - I have Pro on machine 1 but Home on 2. I guess that I have to
put Pro
on machine 2 also. Is that correct?

Don

Yes, and disable Simple Sharing (Folder Options>View).

I have XP Pro on both machines now and still cannot access the Windows or
Program Files directories from the 'other' machine. Looking at the comments
in the file sharing option, it says that it cannot be done. It looks as if
it was a waste of time to put Pro on the second machine.
