help setting up XP advanced network

B

Ben

Can someone point me to a primer on setting up an advanced network on
XP? the microsoft site was not helpful. here is the issue I am
struggling with:

I have 2 computers, one with xp media eddition, one with XP pro. I
want to share several directories between the machines. there are
several other computers on the network which should not have access.
the problem I am having ( I believe) is with setting up user accounts.

I have enabled advanced networking on both computers and shared the
directories in question, but I am not able to login in to either
computer from the other- I am prompted for a username and password, but
none of them work for accessing the files over the network (users work
for local login).

seconday question: is there a way to have network user accounts which
do not have general windows login permission? ie I cannot physically
go to the computer and log in- only on the network?

My main accounts on both computers are admin accounts. Simple
networking works without incident between the two computers.

thanks!

Create matching user accounts (same user name and non-blank password)
on both computers. Folder permissions that you define for the local
user account will apply to the same user on the other computer. This
web page has full details:

I haven't tried it, but this might do what you want on XP
Professional:

1. Go to Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Local Security
Policy.

2. Double-click Local Policies.

3. Double-click User Rights Assignment.

4. In the right pane, double-click "Deny logon locally".

5. Add the desired user accounts, specifying each account in the form
"computer\user", where "computer" is the local computer's name.
My main accounts on both computers are admin accounts. Simple
networking works without incident between the two computers.

I don't have access to XP Media Center Edition, so I don't know if
things that work in XP Professional work there.

thanks for the help. setup seems to work now.

"deny logon locally" solved 50% of the problem- couldn't log in to the
computer, but the name of the account still showed on the welcome
screen. I think I fixed the problem by creating a new group to assign
share permissions for the other computer, and removing that user from
the "users" group.

cheers
