running scandisk on removable drives

I can not get my computer to run a scandisk on my removable hard drive. I
have tried using the my computer, choose drive, properties, tools, chkdisk.
it saise it can only run when i restart but when i restart it doesnt wwork

Instead of running Chkdsk from the drive properties, run it from the Command
Prompt. Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt
At the blinking cursor, type CHKDSK F: and press Enter (F being your external
harddrive).

ok itried this and it would start and then stop and say their are still
errors on your drive, cannot keep running CHKDSK in read only mode

ok i did that and it saise i still have errors and it cannot keep running
chdsk in read only mode
