running recovery and see the dos prompt

I inserted the XP CD and chose the recovery option. After entering
the password, I saw the DOS prompt. Now what? I thought the
recovery program would run automatically without (or with minimum)
human intervention. Do I have to launch fixmbr, bootcfg, or
fixboot myself?

Not the DOS prompt, it is the Recovery Console, which is a command line
application.
