Running Processes

Hello all,

Using Windows Task Manager, I happened to check on the number of processes
that are currently in use on my PC. Right now, there are 64 processes
running. I am using Windows XP SP2. The CPU usage is only at around 4% or
so. I am curious to see how the number of processes I am running compares to
other users. Having 64 processes running seems excessive to me but I'm not
really sure. Just out of curiosity, press ctrl-alt-del to get to your
Windows Task Manager and take a look in the lower left corner of the window
to see the number of processes you are running.

No, it's not excessive, and it's well within the range that most XP users
experience.

Besides, no *number* is really significant. What's far more important is
*which* they are. Some may have a big effect on performance; others' effect
may be so small as to be unnoticeable.

ctrl-alt-del to get to your Windows Task Manager and take a look in

I can't do that at the moment, since Windows Vista is running here now, but
I can tell you that I had a similar number when I ran XP.

The issue is not so much how many are running, as what is running. You need
to look at what is there, research them and decide if you want/need them.
That number is not unusual.

XP traitor...;-) You've gone to the dark side - as seen through the Aero
looking glass.

LOL! Mostly, but not completely. My wife still has XP on her machine, and I
have XP on my laptop. It was just that neither was convenient to look at
when Tony asked.

Seriously, though, I'm happy with Vista here. No problems to speak of.

Yep same here. This one is dual booted with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. I
am keeping XP Pro to check things as needed on it and because I can't get a
driver to work for my NEC laser printer in Vista. But printer
manufacturer's are notorious on not wanting to support older printers in the
newer OS. This one is past 5 years which is where NEC draws the line. The
printer still works fine though.
