Running Java on Vista

I

Ian Pace

I have a new machine (Packard Bell laptop) with Windows Vista, and don't
seem to be able to run Java pages. I tried to use Sun Download Manager but
this wouldn't run. Could someone tell me the steps to take to get Java
automatically running with IE?

Also, are Netscape Browser and Mozilla Firefox compatible with Vista yet?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Sun java will run on vista...download the full setup package & run it.
Not sure about the other browsers, but their respective sites should tell
you.

What errors do you get when you try to install/use Sun java on Vista? I
have the latest version on my Vista and it works fine.

I use Firefox on Vista, again with no problems. Some do experience some
minor issues, those have been logged at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_issues_on_Vista.

Everyone says they have the latest version of something or other running
fine, but they fail to tell what the version number is. I am running version
1.6, but it is NOT the latest. The latest is 1.5 .00.11.

Which one do YOU consider the latest? By release date or by version number?

Also, a link for those that don't have it would be nice, as the Sun and Java
websites are a bear to negotiate.

The same goes for the flash plug-in for I.E.

Good point, as there are different versions of java depending on if you are
a developer and wanting the full SDK or just need the runtime environment.
I am referring to the Java Runtime Environment, not to be confused with the
Java SE Runtime Environment. The latest version of the Java Runtime
Environment is 1.5.00.11. This can be downloaded from
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. The http://www.java.com site is
much easier to navigate when simply looking for the java plugin for your
browser rather than trying to navigate http://www.sun.com/java.
The same goes for the flash plug-in for I.E.

The latest version of Flash can be downloaded from
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/.

Sometimes I fall into the same trap, even though I try not to.

I may mention a small applet that may do what someone needs, but fail to
supply a link. If it somewhat obscure it may be hard to find in Google or
Windows Live Search.

Or, like with the Java runtime environment - which one of the 200,000 links
do you go to? (-:

Also, we don't want to be accused of advertizing.

It's all so confusing: Java Runtime Environment, Java Platform Standard
Edition, SDK, Java SE Runtime Environment, Java Virtual Machine, Java
plugins, Java applets, FlashPlayer, Java3D, Java Web Start. When do you know
what you need, when automatic installations end up with errors that make no
sense, like:
Does this part of Control Panel work well? (I didn't use the CP)
If not. try settings that are compatible with this version of Windows (How?)
Control Panel: Java(TM) Control Panel
Location: C:/Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\javacpl.cpl (Again, how?)
Open here Control Panel to open recommended settings (no suggestions)
-> Tis part of the Control Panel works OK (and?)
info: Which settings have been applied? (only tells about assistent and
wizard for Program Compatibility)
How ever can simple users find their way in the mazes of Microsoft (and Sun
probably)?
What I wanted, is installing Sudoku-Ball:
http://www.sudoku-ball.com/content/view/25/36/
Trying to run it, results in for me unreadable jargon:
<!-- JNLP File for Sudoku Ball Application --> <jnlp spec="1.0+"
codebase="http://www.sudoku.gs/sudokuballapp/app/"> <information>
<title>Sudoku Ball Application 1.08-beta</title> <vendor>Mobile
Excellence B.V. & LenSoft International Ltd.</vendor> <icon
href="icons/ballapp.jpg"/> <icon href="icons/ballapp.jpg"
kind="splash"/> <offline-allowed/> </information> <update
check="timeout" policy="always"/> <resources> <java
href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se" version="1.4+"/> <j2se
version="1.4+"/> <jar href="SudokuBall.jar" download="eager"
main="true"/> </resources> <security> <all-permissions/> </security>
<application-desc main-class="BallApplet"/></jnlp>
Did I install one of the many wrong Javas?
