Running games in DOS mode

I would be grateful if someone could tell me how to run
old games in DOS mode on Windows XP home,or where to put
downloadable old games(where to extract them too).I have
tried to open up the DOS program in the windows folder
but it keeps saying invalid file name,something about the
default name and a pif file.I have never really used DOS
before so i am a complete novice.

Thanx in advance.
 
Most DOS games will not run successfully on XP (they will either not start,
or have problems with sound and or graphics)

The problem is most of these games access areas that are restricted by XP
but were allowed by win 95 etc.

Have a look on google and see if anyone has managed a fix that will make the
game work - try search as "XP <game name>"
