Most DOS programs will have no problem in WinXP. For some you'll need
to investigate the Compatibility feature (right-click the executable,
click "Properties", then click the "Compatibility" tab). If your DOS
program tries to directly manipulate the hardware (like some games,
which write directly to the video hardware to speed things up) it
won't work at all.
Many of them run fine just by starting them directly.
Programs which use graphics and/or sound (games) are usually a bit
more tricky.
One option is to install real DOS to a virtual machine and run the
program in the virtual machine. Might be problematic, especially with
sound, since the DOS programs may not support the hardware which the
