running dos programs in w2k

Barry Ross

I have two DOS programs I used to run under w2k. A couple of months ago I
had to reinstall w2k after a virus attack and left them out. I re-installed
them and can not get them to run. One of them gives the following message
Phar Lap err 74: Can't use -REALBREAK under this version of DPMI.

The second program, an older word processor, gives a message that there is
no room on the disc. It used to work quite well. Any suggestions?

I can't say that this is your problem but I have discovered that as MS
plugs security "hole" more "DOS" programs refuse to work properly. Not
bashing here just stating the fact that people have discovered ways to
use "your" PC to make your life miserable and fixing that "breaks" old
code that used to run. You could try installing on a early version of
Win2K(non-service pack) As far as the Word processor being confused
about the space on the disk I would hazard a guess that you have so much
free space now that the program reads it as a negative number. Probably
2 gigs is confusing it so temporarily load up the HD to reduce free
space and then try running again. If that works maybe have it live on a
small partition.
