When trying to install new software, I get the message that runfirst.exe has
encountered an problem and needs to close. How do I repair this?

What is the software name, version, and publisher? Is it 1 program or more
that have this same problem?
If this is a shareware program, it just may have a glitch in its Autorun
attempt.
I'd suggest you browse the install media, to look at what it contains.

The program is new, not shareware. It is Nile: An Ancient Egyptian Quest,
published by Simon and Schuster. I have browsed the contents of the disc and
tried to load it from "Setup" which appears to work, but after installing it
and trying to open it, I get "Nile.exe has encountered a problem and needs to
close." Then, that's all she wrote. ???

humh... de-install Nile. Reboot pc & let it reload Windows fresh. Close your antivirus. Don't start any other apps.
Now, run the setup procedure as per Simon & Schuster's instructions. It should have a Readme file on the media.
