rundll32 error

My pc hangs constantly and when I shut down I get an
error that runndll32.exe is not responding. When I end
the program and restart, the System32 window opens and
remains on the screen until I close it. I am running
Windows XP Home edition on a Dell w/Pentium 4, 30GB HD,
256RAM.

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show? Also,
remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode.

There is a virus out there that is corrupting the runddll.exe and causing an error like you are getting. Update your virus definitions and run another check. You can also go into the windows\system32 folder where this is found and copy a new runddlll.exe to this folder. First rename the present runddll.exe to runddllold.exe and then copy a new one to the file. You can do this by placing your XP CD or Recovery CD in the drive close the autoplay window if it comes up and after renaming the runddll.exe then go>start\run and type in sfc /scannow and then click ok or hit enter on your keyboard. Be sure to put the space in after sfc . Good luck. {:~)
