RUN menu won't work

Hello.
I can't run ANYTHING from the Run menu...example type msconfig and
nothing happens. Same for regedit etc. When I go to the actual programs
and try to run them...same thing nothing happens. Even notepad won't
open. Some programs work..some won't open. The system boots ok and
doesn't seem slow. Any Advice?
Thanks.

This behavior can be caused by virus activity. Run a complete system scan
with your anti virus program and make sure that the virus definitions for
the program are up to date.

Let us know what you find.

Hello.
Yes you are completely right. I booted into safe mode and was able
to do a selective start-up.(windows components only). I was then able to
re-boot again into safe mode and install an anti-virus (AVG) program.
(even though Nortons was installed but not working!) When I ran the scan
I found 322 infected files....I.worm/Bagle, Clicker.AB and multiple
variants of various worms....this is not my machine BTW just fixing it
for a friend. I am now able to boot normally and I am in the process of
totally cleaning the system of virus and ad-ware.
THANK YOU!

I have the same problem... on a friend's computer. I suspected a virus,
also installed AVG 7.0. It found some viruses, but the problem still
exists. I'm going back to run AVG again, but wondering if anyone has
an idea which virus is causing this?

Follow up... I copied MSCONFIG.EXE from another XP machine and I can now
run msconfig.
I copied REGEDIT.EXE from another XP machine and I still cannot get it to
run.

Many viruses and worms will block the running of MSCONFIG, Task Manager and
the Registry Editor. Since the programs are blocked by name, renaming the
executables is a workaround. Example: Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com

Or you can run the tool created by MVP Doug Knox that creates a "backup
set" of those three programs (each with a name different than the
originals): http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_emerutils.htm
