Rumours about hotfixes and "SFC /SCANNOW"

S

Simmonds

I run Windows XP Pro with SP1 and with all other patches except SP2.
My PC runs standalone except for a broadband connection to the Net.

After various registry tweaks, patches and fiddles there are now
various weird glitches happening on my system.

I came across the System File Checker and it looks as if it might
help.

------

Different websites seem to say different things about SFC so can
someone here help me out. My question is:

If I run "SFC /SCANNOW" on XP Pro then will I have to download and
re-install most of the hotfixes I have already applied?

re-install hotfixes from WU is not neccesary, SFC is based on Windows
File Protection, and this feature only remove valid hotfixes from a
system under a very restrictive set of circumstances

No, all hotfixes will remain.

As others said, you shouldn't have a problem with hotfixes. The reason
you're seeing the contradictory information on this is probably because
there were significant problems with sfc under Windows 9X. The file
database it used was not automatically updated for hotfixes.

sfc may help you if you have replaced any system files, but it won't fix
"registry tweaks ...and fiddles".
