Rules in Outlook 2007

I am currently running Outlook 2007 on XP and am having problems running
rules in Cached Exchange Mode. The rule is applied when an email arrives in
my mailbox, but then 8 times out of 10, the original message is replaced with
another without the rules applied. If I right click on the grey bar at the
top of the email message, it gives me the option of going back to the
original email where the rules have been applied, which is a pain and relies
on my spotting that the email has arrived in the first place. There are
three rules, fairly simple i.e. each is set to run on receipt of emails from
one sender, assigned to a given category and marked with a follow up flag. I
have taken off cached exchange mode and the rules work fine, except now, the
speed of Outlook has slowed (to its real speed so I am told by our IT
boffins) and I have to rely on VPN to be working to be able to access my
email, calendar etc from home. I have deleted and redone the rules at least
twice now. I am up to date on all my updates, so I'm not missing a patch
anywhere. Ideally, I would like rules and cached exchange mode to work as
they used to in Outlook 2003 as with the rules applied I can keep track of
important emails from my bosses in amongst the dross that comes in from
everywhere else.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, could you help, or is this a
known problem and I have to wait for Microsoft to sort it out?

Hopefully

So outlook creating a duplicate during the sync and marking it as a
conflict? Are their any clues as to the problem in the sync errors folder?
Is the rule marked as a client side rule?

Try it without either the category or flag to see if it works as expected.
If so, have you considered using automatic formatting to highlight messages
from these senders in different colors? It's a view option and would not
affect the sync.

Diane - thanks for your reply - you are quite right, all my lovely flagged
and categorised emails are in the conflicts folder, but there doesn't seem to
be anything wrong with them, apart from the same message appearing in the
grey bar at the top of the email telling me that I have made changes to
another copy of the email. Oh no I haven't! I have already tried running
one rule at a time as I read somewhere that there was a problem with Outlook
processing rules over a certain size, but that doesn't work either. I have
already put colours on to help the emails stand out, but I really like the
rules, especially if they would work properly in 2007 as everything gets put
into the relevant task folder by category and it makes it so much easier to
keep up with what I haven't done for my bosses. I can't check about the
client side rule as my VPN has decided not to connect me with the server
tonight, but if that is the message you get when you have finished creating a
rule saying that it will only work when Outlook is running, then yes. Is it
worth uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook do you think?
