I am running MS Outlook 2003 in Windows XP Home Edition. I have an unusual
entry that has appeared in my RULES AND ALERTS box. I did NOT put it there.
It has a check mark, and says "Clear categories on mail (recommended)." I
cannot delete the entry (the choice is greyed out) and I cannot remove the
check mark. Any suggestions?

TIA,
Bruce

Interesting Bruce... If I can figure it out I'll let you know. I just
found this same thing in my Outlook rules and alerts. Google web
search found no hits on "Clear categories on mail". It found one hit
on Groups... this one. Surprising also your post is from yesterday.

I'm running XP Pro and Office 2k3 in a corporate environment on
Exchange Server.

Yes, I did a Google search for the very same thing, and came up empty. I
don't like it when things appear without my knowledge!

"Clear categories on mail (recommended).""
This is a rule created by Outlook 2007. Sounds like you had the BETA
installed?

Bruce,

I too have seen this rule and was unable to delete it, along with other
rules. I believe the rule you're speaking of was created by a
third-party application, SpamPal, but I have not confirmed this.

I found a post on Microsoft's site around best practices and they
explained that it is NOT a best practice to use client-only rules when
using more than one computer to access a mail account. This nugget of
information was very helpful, as I use multiple computers to access my
Microsoft Exchange accounts. I went to each computer and found that on
one of them, I assume the one that created the rule, I was able to
delete the rule(s).

I hope this helps.

But how do you get rid of it??

Thank you, Roady. Very good to know. And saves me from testing. ;)

It is not removable from there - I thought that was in the previous posts. I
can't clear the check box, nor is the "Delete" option enabled.

2003. Ad you said, I had 2007 Beta installed. I uninstalled it - too slow -
but that rule is there, and immovable.

Try starting Outlook 2003 once with the /cleanrules switch to clear out all your rules. If you have others besides this one, you may want to export to an .rwz file for a backup.

i too had this problem because of having previously installed office

switch removed the rule for me.....nice one lads...!
