RSS feed aggregator?

I am looking for a RSS feed aggregator and prefer something like
Abilon (http://www.abilon.org/). However, Abilon is a very hungry RAM
hog, requiring 20 Mb even when it's sitting in the tray doing
absolutely nothing. Is there a less resources hungry alternative which
offers more or less Abilon's features. It must be able to import (and
export) OPML files (http://www.faganfinder.com/search/rss.shtml#opml).

BTW, I want a standalone RSS feed aggregator!

Used it before, but did not like it (can't remember exactly why). It's
much better on the resources though. However, it refuses to import my
OPML file. Furthermore, it has no Help and no manual, and what the
heck are "smart views" (could not get rid of them)?

Me too. Feedreader is ok, but still needs work. Slow, downloads lots
of redundant stuff like company logos/icons etc.. even when set not to
download images. Bug in showing what's in a file - have to look at
the file to see it is wrong or bare, click on another feed and then go
back and look at the feed you really wanted - to see it. AND seems to
crash windows sometimes - some problem with the video from the looks
of the crash. Crash doesn't always occur - but there's some
combination of programs I use that makes it happen. Maybe FireFox and
FeedReader?

Feed Reader is only half-baked in my opinion.

I'm not familiar with Abilon, but RSS Reader is pretty good:

http://www.rssreader.com/

Version 1.0.88.0 released 3/22/04 is the current stable version and
beyond basic XML/RSS has "Atom 0.1/0.2/0.3 support, import OPML,
export, feed directory, configurable fonts and style sheets, feed
password support, mark as important, type filter, sound, default
browser support, print, email, memory optimizing, etc..."

It does require MS .NET framework if you don't already have it on your
system but site says it runs under Win 98/NT/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

YMMV, but on my system (XP Home SP2, 2.8G, 512M) it uses under 3MB RAM
at idle and less than one percent CPU. It peaks near 70% CPU for a
second or two when updating all feeds (cable modem, 3-4.5 Mbps) but
drops back down immediately.

Looks good but doesn't work in W98.

And it only works with IE, which is very bad. It's a beta version
though, so perhaps this serious fault will be corrected.

"only works with IE"??? I have never used it "with" IE....it works as
a standalone if you set it that way. I haven't opened IE in months. If
I want a new channel I discover while surfing with Opera of Fireox, I
just copy the RSS feed address and add it to my list....I often browse
feeds with NO browser open!

Any indication how this one is on memory usage? All the stand-alone
RSS readers I've tried just go nuts for memory.

I like RSS Bandit http://www.rssbandit.org/ for its relatively mature
feature set, but like the rest it likes around 50 to 100 MB to play
around in.

<sigh> Another .net program.

So what? What does the internal browser use?
Yep, indeed, it's IE! Can you configure it to use a different browser?
Can you use an(y) external browser?

well, it's not a tiny thing, but it doesn't seem to make a big dent
either..(I don't leave it open all the time...just check it now &
then.) I am using XP with a decent memory, so maybe it's just doesn't
make a big difference...(I often have 2 different browsers + Agent
newsreader and 8-9 other things open at the same time as "Great News"
and I get by fine.

*shrug*..perhaps it does use some parts of the IE engine...I have
never tried to change it, but in the options it has a blank to check
which reads..."Open RSS feeds in default browser"....my default
browser is Opera 7, but I don't even try to use it, because I LIKE my
RSS reader to be a stand-alone...

maybe I'll check and see how it works...

well! THAT was quick & easy!..I changed the setting and it did open
the news feed in Opera....I have no idea what powers Great News, but
it did what I asked. YMMV.

That one looks quite good actually. I ditched RSSOwl, which requires
JAVA. As someone else remarked, the internal browser thing appears to
be using some of IE's engine. It does need some work though. For
instance it seems impossible to change font size (and type).

BTW, RAM use fluctuates between 1-6 Mb over here when program is
minimized and is 1.8-2.4 Mb most of the time.
