RPC server unavailable

When turning my PC on this morning, I received the message "RPC server is
unavailable. Maximum retry attempts exceeded." I now only have a
screensaver that says Windows XP Home Edition and cannot access anything
else. Any help would be appreciated!!!
 
Boot to the XP setup CD, and press 'r' for recovery console, run the command : CHKDSK /R
