RPC Server unavailable DFS,

A

Amit Kaushal

Hi,

I have 2 DC's (windows 2000, SP4) in a small domain of abt 30 comps
(win98, Me, Professional).

I had made a root dfs on a DC server1. Then according to all my
knowledge had deleted the root dfs from the dc server1.

Now when i start the DFS snap in and say display existing root dfs it
shows me the root dfs ie CustomerService which i had created and then
deleted (according to my knowledge).

When i click onDisplay existing DFS Root the existing display dfs root
box pops up and i go

\\IndiaIdeas.com (DEomain Name)
\\Domain DFS roots
\\CustomerService

when i click on CustomerService and then on ok all that i get is :

RPC Server Unavailable.

Have done lots of research on the net and now am finally posting it on
the net.
Was unable to find something on the Microsoft KB site. If i missed
anything there pls point me to it.Will someone please tell me where i
went wrong and how to resolve it.

Even pointing me in the correct direction will suffice.
If you want you may mail me @ (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed)

The RPC error usually indicates one of the following

1. Name resolution problem. (DNS)
2. Firewall is blocking RPC communication.
3. The RPC service is not running on the target.

Verify that the items above are ok. If everything seems to be ok then you
may want to run a network trace when you attempt to go to the
customerservice folder. This will usually show you where the connection is
failing.

It seems like you haven't deleted the root properly. How did you delete the
root?
Please run 'dfsutil.exe /view' and see what information it shows about this
root (it shows the information stored for this root in metadata).

Hi Mukul,

i did what you had suggested abd the output is as follows:

C:\>dfsutil /list:indiaideas.com
Getting DomDfs's in indiaideas.com
Connecting to server2.indiaideas.com
Found 1 DomDfs's
Customer Service
The command completed successfully.

Ok, so now i am trying to delete DomDfs Customer Service:
C:\>dfsutil /remroot:Customer Service /server:server2.indiaideas.com
Unrecognized option "ervice"
System error 87 has occurred.
The parameter is incorrect.

So now please let me know as to what to do to delete it and the RPC
Server unavailable still comes if i go through the gui.

TIA

Please run 'dfsutil.exe /view:... /level:1' (high level view of your dfs
root) and send the output. Use quotes around the Dfs root name like
"Customer Service" in the command line.
You should download the latest dfsutil.exe from the latest W2K service pack
and use it.
Very likely you haven't cleaned up the root properly. So if you want to do
cleanup now, you need to use options '/unmap' and '/clean' in dfsutil.exe.
You may want to wait until I look at output of 'dfsutil.exe /view' and tell
you if there is any other issue.

Like I said below, you also need to use 'unmap' option in dfsutil.exe for
removing DFS root completely.

These two commands:
dfsutil.exe /unmap:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service
/root:\\server1\Customer Service
dfsutil.exe /unmap:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service
/root:\\server2\Customer Service

Also for command 'dfsutil..exe /view', you need to give this command
"dfsutil.exe /view:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service /level:1"

Amit,

Don't worry. Things can be clean easily - only as soon as you run the
correct commands. I have been telling to run 'unmap' command in my previous
2 email replies but you are not doing that, why?

Have you run the command that I told in my previous reply? ('dfsutil.exe
/unmap...')
After these commands are run, it should be fine for you.

Also, You have executed wrong command.
You need to execute this command (note the position of quote characters):
dfsutil.exe /view:"\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service" /level:1

Hi Mukul,

L:\>dfsutil.exe /view:"\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service /level:1"
\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service /level:1 is a DomDfs
Connecting to server2.indiaideas.com
System error 2 has occurred.
The system cannot find the file specified.

I guess i have really screwed this up :-(
Any ideas as to how to get out of this now?

Thanks
amit

Like I said below, you also need to use 'unmap' option in dfsutil.exe for
removing DFS root completely.

These two commands:
dfsutil.exe /unmap:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service
/root:\\server1\Customer Service
dfsutil.exe /unmap:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service
/root:\\server2\Customer Service

Also for command 'dfsutil..exe /view', you need to give this command
"dfsutil.exe /view:\\indiaideas.com\Customer Service /level:1"

NetbiosName=SERVER1
DnsHostName=server1.indiaideas.com
SiteName=billdesk

fDsEnabled=1
2:

DnsHostName=server2.indiaideas.com
SiteName=billdesk
fIsPdc=1

The command completed successfully.

Then i did

K:\>dfsutil /list:indiaideas.com
Getting DomDfs's in indiaideas.com
Connecting to server2.indiaideas.com
Found 1 DomDfs's
Customer Service
The command completed successfully.

K:\>dfsutil /clean:server2

Found 1 DomDfs's
Customer Service
The command completed successfully.

Now tell me what i can do ??

Please run 'dfsutil.exe /view:... /level:1' (high level view of your dfs
root) and send the output. Use quotes around the Dfs root name like
"Customer Service" in the command line.
You should download the latest dfsutil.exe from the latest W2K
service
pack
and use it.
Very likely you haven't cleaned up the root properly. So if you want
to
do
cleanup now, you need to use options '/unmap' and '/clean' in dfsutil.exe.
You may want to wait until I look at output of 'dfsutil.exe /view'
and
tell
you if there is any other issue.

Hi Mukul,

i did what you had suggested abd the output is as follows:

C:\>dfsutil /list:indiaideas.com
Getting DomDfs's in indiaideas.com
Connecting to server2.indiaideas.com
Found 1 DomDfs's
Customer Service
The command completed successfully.

Ok, so now i am trying to delete DomDfs Customer Service:
C:\>dfsutil /remroot:Customer Service /server:server2.indiaideas.com
Unrecognized option "ervice"
System error 87 has occurred.
The parameter is incorrect.

So now please let me know as to what to do to delete it and the RPC
Server unavailable still comes if i go through the gui.

TIA
Amit Kaushal

It seems like you haven't deleted the root properly. How did you delete
the
root?
Please run 'dfsutil.exe /view' and see what information it shows about
this
root (it shows the information stored for this root in metadata).
(dfsutil.exe is reskit/support tool)

Hi,

I have 2 DC's (windows 2000, SP4) in a small domain of abt 30 comps
(win98, Me, Professional).

I had made a root dfs on a DC server1. Then according to all my
knowledge had deleted the root dfs from the dc server1.

Now when i start the DFS snap in and say display existing root
dfs
it
shows me the root dfs ie CustomerService which i had created
and
then
deleted (according to my knowledge).

When i click onDisplay existing DFS Root the existing display
dfs
root
box pops up and i go

\\IndiaIdeas.com (DEomain Name)
\\Domain DFS roots
\\CustomerService

when i click on CustomerService and then on ok all that i get is :

RPC Server Unavailable.

Have done lots of research on the net and now am finally
posting
it on
