routing

I'm trying to use my windows 2000 server as a gateway for
my local network to the internet. I have enabled routing
and remote access and enabled ip routing. But the server
doesn not seem to be forwarding packets from its local
interface to the external interface. I've tried
changeing registry settings as according to knowledge
base article 230082 as well but that does not seem to
help either. Can someone please assist.

Is your local LAN using private addresses? Private addresses cannot be
routed to the Internet. You need to use some sort of proxy server or NAT to
translate the private addresses to the server's public IP. Read the W2k Help
on RRAS and NAT.

Make sure you are using NAT unless you are using real live
addresses - if you are then it is probably a subnet issue.

I am using private addresses on my local lan but I'm also
using NAT to translate my private IP's to public. But i'm
still having the problem. IP packets are not being
forwarded to the external connection. Is this a problem
with windows 2000 server because I notice that it works
fine with NT once you select the enable IP forwading check
box in the network properties.

What machine is doing NAT? If the router is doing NAT, then the W2k
machine just needs to work as an IP router. A simple diagram of your network
would help. eg

Internet
|
public IP
NAT router
IP?
|
IP? gateway?
W2k RRAS
192.168.0.1 dg blank
|
workstations
192.168.0.x dg 192.168.0.1
