I was having problems sharing an ADSL connection to three different PCs,
using a router...

To Chuck

I followed your recommandations but so far it doesn't work.
But when the ADSL line is connected to a port other than WAN each one of the
computers can connect to the internet if the other is not.
The modem I am using is US robotics model 8000-02 MAC address 00C049A807B8
Basically what I do is when I connect the two PCS to the relevant router
ports, I configure the LAN TCP/IP properties accordingly: defaut gateway
set to the router internal addresss 192.168.123.254, and IP addresses set to
192.123.254.1 for the first computer and 192.123.254.2 for the second. Then
I fill the China Telecom DNS server addresses 202.96.209.6 and
202.96.209.133. What else need to be done?
I am thinking maybe it is the router that is not configured properly, but
there is no software with it on either PCs?
Thanks.
Patrick

To Steve:
Indeed when the ADSL modem is connected to other ports rather than to the
WAN port, only one PC can be connected at a time.
But when I connect the cable to the WAN port none of the computers can
connect to the internet.

Patrick,

Is this what you are calling the "modem"?
<http://www.usr.com/support/overview-template.asp?prod=s-networking>

What device is connected on the other end of the "ADSL line"? Is the ADSL line
a crossover or straight thru cable?

Cheers,

The IP addresses that you've assigned to the computers are wrong --
they must be in the same 192.168.123.x subnet as the router. Try
192.168.123.1 and 192.168.123.2.

I usually find it better to configure the computers to obtain an IP
address automatically, so that the router gives them their
configurations via DHCP.

Sorry I was talking of course of the US Robotics router...
For the ADSL connection we have subscribed from the phone operator so the
phone line is connected to the ADSL modem..
Thanks
Patrick

I tried with those address but it doesn't solve the problem what I was
thinking is that maybe the router is not properly configured to act as a
DHCP server, so do you know how I could change that?
Thanks
Pat

Patrick,

OK, I think we're getting closer.

Is the router connected to the modem with a straight-thru cable, or a cross-over
cable?

Looking at the Installation Guide for the USR 8000, on page 3 the section titled
"Connecting a Cable or DSL Modem...", step 1 directs you to "Locate the Ethernet
cable from your Cable or DSL modem that is connected to your PC's Ethernet
adapter". Is that the cable that you connected between the router and modem?

Did you connect to the router (step 4) and set it up as instructed?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, as connected to the DSL
service successfully.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Cheers,
Chuck
