Route incoming faxes to an SMTP address

I want to divert incoming faxes to an e-mail address which is not a part of
our Exchange 5.5 organisation.

The fax service is running on a 2000 server which is part of an NT4 domain.

I can route faxes to a local mailbox, but cannot manage to automatically
forward from there. I have tried setting a contact as an alternative
recipient, and setting an out-of-office autoreply, but neither of these fire
when the fax service drops a mail into the mailbox.

TIA for any advice.

This is one of the e-mail loop prevention features in Exchange Server 5.5,
automatic replies and out of office messages to the Internet are disabled by
default in the Internet Mail Service. You can enable either or both by
bringing up the Properties sheet for the IMS and clicking the 'Advanced
Options' button on the Internet Mail tab. You'll need to stop and restart
the IMS for the changes to take effect. Note that this opens you up to
email loops that can halt your Exchange Server.
