Room Design Software

Hal Hersh

Is there any (free)software that will let me design a room (specifically, a
kitchen) so that my wife and I can visualize different styles and colors of
floors, countertops, walls, etc.? Ideally, I'd be able to load in a
digital photo of my own kitchen, and design it my way.

Thanks in advance!

Design-A-Room lets you draw a room and put all the furniture in with
exactly the right dimensions, and then move the pieces around to your
heart's content. Put walls wherever you want - move them, resize them,
make any shape and size room up to 40 by 25 feet. Put several rooms
together on the same page, or put the same room on twice to see what
different arrangements look like. Design-A-Room comes loaded with 17
different walls, doors, fixtures, and so on, and 31 different pieces of
furniture, including couches, pianos, tables - even a pool table and
fireplace. All are professionally drawn so that you know exactly what
you are looking at when you view the room. You can re-size each piece
to the nearest inch. Design-A-Room also shows you the exact location of
each piece in the room to the nearest inch.

The program can be used not only for designing rooms or apartments, but
also in the variety of other areas - garden architecture, housing
development (houses as objects), webdesign (webpage as the room)...

You sometimes reconstruct rooms or rearrange things placed in them. You
move heavy furniture just to see if everything will fit with no problem,
be handy, if it could be done without all the work. This program enables
you to simulate everything with no need to draw on a square paper, or to
push things there and back repeatedly.

Features:
- Design your room, or entire appartment consisting of more rooms
- Wide standard object library, insert exact objects' dimensions
- Create your library of objects you use more often (e.g. your typical
window, chair)
- Walk through the project in 3D
- Print the project in certain scale even over more pages
- Measure the distances in the project
- Multi-language support.

I suggest you try the IKEA kitchen planner first (available with English or Metric units). It is
*very* easy to use and has lots of cabinets/range hood etc. You can add doors, windows, electrical
outlets, choose colors and view the result in three dimensions.

Limitations: only rectangular rooms (no odd shapes). You cannot add your own furniture and there are
no tables/chairs/stoools.

I see Bjorn posted the relevant ACF link:

All the apps listed there whose names start with "Furnish: " are similar apps created by the same
company (the included furniture varies).
