Roaming Profiles

Hello,

What is the easiest way to ensure that the local profile will always be
overwritten by a roaming?

for example.

if i have a user logged into machine A... and i want to update shortcuts, or
favorites or something in the profile, i will do so on the network profile
on the server... every time the users logs off or reboots, the server copy
(that i made changes to) is overwritten by the local (one without changes i
want)...

is this be design?

I don't quite follow your example, but will endeavour to briefly explain how
roaming profiles work in Windows 2000...

Basically, the profiles (or individual files therein) are timestamped. The
newer timestamp wins.

So, if you logon to a workstation and there's no profile, you'll download
your roaming profile. When you logoff, any changes that you've made since
logging on will be written back to the server. The next time you logon, the
profiles are compared and any newer changes on the server are downloaded.
If there are no newer changes, nothing is downloaded. If the client is
newer, nothing is downloaded. When you logoff, the check is made again and
any newer changes on the client are uploaded.

If you logged on off-line, and made changes. These changes would be
synchronised with the server copy of your profile the next time you logoff
the network.

Bear in mind, that changes, etc. can get difficult to track if you logon to
multiple machines on and offline and make changes to your profile on these
different machines at different times.

Also, if you share the profile with someone else, the changes could be
radically different. In this case, MS recommends using mandatory profiles
to avoid possible corruption.

see....

this is all i'm trying to ask.

I run win 2k ad... all users use roaming profiles.

if a user is logged in... and i add shortcuts to their SERVER COPY PROFILE
\\domaincontroller\users\user1profile\desktop

and they log off their machine and log back in... the CLIENT SIDE profile
(old profile without shortcuts i just added) is saved and loaded... the new
shortcuts from the server are deleted...

so if i want to add shortcuts, i have to do it while the users are not
logged in... i just wondered if you could make a setting that the server
copy will always load.

our users are locked down and cannot make profile changes... they cannot add
icons or even right click... so i'm not worried about losing changes on the
local side.

is that any clearer?

thanks for the reply!

Ah, I see what you're asking ;-)

You've already got it then. You have to add the shortcuts when the user
isn't using the profile. This way, they will download the new changes
you've made at next logon.

I know of no way to always force a download. That's not to say there isn't
a registry setting that can do this; just that I'm not aware of it.
